Greetings from Founder
Hello! I am Mia Lappalainen, the owner of Outinen Riding Centre (Outisen Ratsastuskeskus). I found my place on Earth in Lapland and founded a horse paradise at the shore of Outijoki river, 12 km from Kemijärvi towards Sodankylä.
I invite everyone to come visit us - I cater to people of all ages and levels of experience. I organize trail rides for beginners and experienced riders, horsemanship and riding classes, and of course sleigh rides with the sound of Christmas bells! I am also happy to accommodate any special requests you may have to make your stay memorable.
My horses are happy animals who enjoy a lot of space on our farm and love to interact with our guests. Take a moment for yourself and come and get to know our unhurried, happy and animal-loving lifestyle. Find your second home at Outinen Riding Centre! Welcome!
Outinen Riding Centre offers horses a natural and harmonious environment where they can thrive. Our horses live in herds, allowing them to form their own social hierarchy—just as they would in the wild. While they are well-trained and respectful toward humans, we honor their natural instincts, especially during our forest riding trips. Maintaining their natural order helps them feel secure and relaxed.

Most of our services are beginner-friendly, and our experienced, well-trained horses make riding enjoyable for all skill levels. For more experienced riders, we offer tailored riding trips that provide additional challenge and adventure. In addition to trail rides, we also provide paddock lessons and traditional horse-drawn sleigh rides.

​At Outinen Horse Riding Centre, more than 20 Finnhorse foals have been born. Breeding has been Mia’s lifelong passion—especially only breeding rare genetic lines that help preserve the Finnish Horse as a versatile breed in accordance with the breed standard. She has also mastered the use of old-school tools and techniques for working with horses. While today’s loads are thankfully smaller than in her ancestor’s time, a piece of Finnish history lives on here.

Our horses live mostly outdoors, as they are well-adapted to the changing seasons with their thick coats. They grow their winter fur early and thrive in natural surroundings. Living in a herd, they form a peaceful and social hierarchy, enjoy a relaxed farm life, and show a deep curiosity about the world around them. They drink from the river, eat hay freely, lie down together, gallop in the fields, and keep each other entertained.
About us
This photograph features Mia’s great-great-grandfather with a truly impressive load of timber. Back in those days, Finnhorses were the backbone of Finnish work life—long before machines took over. They played a vital role during times of war, often under incredibly harsh conditions. Sadly, many horses lost their lives in service.

When machinery began replacing them in work life, the need for Finnhorses declined dramatically. Many were euthanized as a result. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were over 300,000 Finnhorses in Finland. Today, only around 20,000 remain. That’s why responsible breeding is essential to preserve this national treasure.​
